Patterns in the badlands is a song by Joel Porter about second chances; it tells the story of feeling lost and trying to find your way. We decided to go with a spaceman theme because we wanted to create an otherworldly sense of being out of place in a foreign land. The props used by the main character to navigate and find his way ended up being exactly what he needed to “shed” in order to finally find the road back home - alluding to the theme of having to let go of the familiar and known to find ourselves again. We shot this piece on anamorphic lenses with an unusually wide delivery aspect ratio of 3.4:1 in order to make the main character feel even smaller and more lost in the big frame and deliver beautiful landscape views of The Badlands of North Dakota.
